Transponder “Chip” Keys
The word “Transponder” was invented around 1944. In basic terms, a transponder is a miniaturized electronic chip that has what is called Non-Volatile Memory. Non-Volatile Memory is the type of memory that doesn’t require constant energy for retention. Along with that electronic chip is a set of copper windings, very fine wire coiled around a tube. These copper windings look similar to the windings you would find in an electric motor.

Transponder chips embedded in the plastic case of a key was introduced in 1995 as a car theft deterrent. The transponder chip is passive, it doesn’t need a battery – the activation code is read when you turn the key in the ignition. If the transponder chip is broken or missing, the engine will not start. There are currently three types of vehicle transponder systems:
- Fixed Electronic Code – Each key has a different electronic code written to it. These codes are permanent and they are not altered when the engine is started.
- Rolling Electronic Code – Each key has a different electronic code, which is re-written each time the engine is started.
- Cryptographic Electronic Code – the transponder memory is protected using bi-directional encryption of data. Internal algorithms are configured to interpret the messages sent from transponder to ECU (Electronic Control Unit). This is similar to password protection.
